“Embrace the Suck” began as a bit of gritty military slang. In fact it was started in Operation Iraqi Freedom as a mantra to encourage service members to endure. In my world, it’s a mantra for leaders who are ready to grow through the tough moments. I use it often in training and talks because the truth is, leadership isn’t always smooth. Sometimes “the suck” shows up as a tough conversation with a struggling team member, the loneliness of being the one who has to make the final call, or the overwhelm of trying to lead when you’re still learning to believe in yourself.
To embrace it, leaders have to learn skills like...
1. Emotional regulation
2. Active listening & coaching
3. Empathy & kindness under pressure
4. The ability to sit with discomfort without shutting down.
